IVF procedure
Infertility cases have increased significantly in the last few years. In such a situation, people are taking the help of IVF. With its help, the baby’s laughter can echo in the house of a couple struggling with infertility. Some people also believe that the gender of the child can be chosen with the help of IVF. Meaning, it can be decided in advance whether a boy or a girl will be born, but does this really happen? Let us know what are its rules and what are the opinions of experts. First let us know what IVF is.
IVF is a medical technique in which embryos are created by placing a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm in a lab. After this the embryo is put into the woman’s uterus.
When is IVF needed?
IVF is usually done when the couple is unable to have a child even after a lot of efforts and treatment. Apart from this, fallopian tube blockage in women is caused due to infertility due to decrease in eggs in women and sperm in men due to increasing age. Generally, when doctors have made all efforts and still the couple does not have a child through any treatment, then doctors recommend IVF. In the last few years, the number of people undergoing IVF from IVF centers in India has also increased.
Can the gender of the child be known in IVF?
Dr. Saloni Chadha in the Department of Gynecology at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, tells that genetic testing of the embryo can be done during the IVF process. With this, any genetic disease occurring in future can be detected. The gender of the child can also be known through this test. But in India its use to find out gender is illegal. There is a provision of punishment for those who do or make others do this.
What is the ban on gender selection?
In India, for a long time there has been a social thinking of giving priority to sons over daughters. Due to this, the ratio of men and women also reduced in many states. For this reason, gender determination in IVF is illegal. PCPNDT Act has also been made regarding this. Experts believe that techniques like IVF should be used for the problem of infertility.
