Dibang Multipurpose Project: In a strategic good news for India, India has accelerated work on its tallest dam ‘Dibang Multipurpose Project’ in Arunachal Pradesh near the China border.
Notably, China had started construction of a huge dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet, which is being considered an attempt to gain strategic advantage against India. In response to the Chinese construction, State-owned NHPC Limited has placed a big bid of Rs 17,069 crore for the construction of the Dibang Multipurpose Project aimed at generating power as well as creating a buffer in case of sudden release of water from China, thus protecting from possible floods. When will India complete Dibang Multipurpose Project?
According to the report, the Dibang Multipurpose project is expected to be completed by the year 2032 with a timeline of 91 months. Signifying its strategic importance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the 2880 MW Dibang project last year. Recently, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and BJP leaders visited the project site at Minli village.

According to the NHPC tender document, the two major objectives of this project are power generation and flood control. Dibang River and Siang River together form the Brahmaputra. This dam is considered extremely important for India’s strategic security as it will act as a protective shield against China’s plans.
