Madhya Pradesh Water Conservation: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Madhya Pradesh is moving rapidly towards water self-sufficiency. Under ‘Jal Ganga Augmentation Campaign’, 1.77 lakh water conservation works have been completed. The focus is on improving ground water level through farm ponds, well recharge and rain water harvesting.
Villages that once faced dry wells, empty ponds and drinking water crisis in summers are slowly changing today. The biggest government campaign running on water in Madhya Pradesh has now started showing its impact on the ground. The ‘Jal Ganga Augmentation Campaign’ running under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has become not just a government scheme but an effort to provide permanent relief to the villages from water crisis.
The state government claims that so far more than 1.77 lakh water conservation works have been completed under the campaign. A cost of more than Rs 6 thousand 201 crore has been approved for these works. The special thing is that this campaign is not limited to papers only, but projects like farm ponds, recharge of dry wells and rain water harvesting have become visible directly in the villages.

Effort to make water conservation a mass movement
‘Jal Ganga Augmentation Campaign’ was launched under Vikram Utsav 2026. Its objective is to revive the old water structures of the state and create new water sources. A total target of 2 lakh 42 thousand 188 works has been set in this campaign being run by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department in collaboration with MNREGA.
The government has approved a budget of ₹6,201.81 crore for this, out of which ₹4,443.85 crore has been spent so far. The basic concept of the scheme is – “Field water in the field and village water in the village”. That means an effort to stop every drop of rain at the local level.
water returning to dry wells
The biggest achievements of the campaign include ‘Dug Well Recharge’ i.e. recharge of dry wells. According to government data, more than 88,123 wells have been recharged so far. This initiative is considered very important in rural areas because the falling groundwater level affects farmers and rural families the most. Apart from this, construction of 53,568 farm ponds has been completed. Apart from helping farmers in irrigation, these ponds are also expected to be beneficial in animal husbandry and ground water conservation.
Madhya Pradesh increased rapidly in rain water harvesting
The state government says that special focus has been laid on increasing the capacity of rain water harvesting through scientific methods. The effect of this is that the pace of water conservation works has increased rapidly in the state. More than 27 thousand other works related to water recharge have also been completed. Under the campaign, not only construction work but also environmental activities have been included. Works like cleaning of water tanks in schools, plantation of trees and cleaning of local water sources are also being done on a large scale.
Khandwa becomes number 1 district of the state
According to the latest ranking of 14 May 2026, Khandwa district stands first in the entire state in Jal Ganga Augmentation Campaign. Khandwa has achieved a score of 7.51. 9,131 works were started here, out of which 2,944 works have been completely completed. Khargone stood second, which performed best in financial progress. After this, Barwani, Ujjain and Rajgarh remained among the top districts.
Hope for relief from ground water crisis
Experts believe that if such projects continue to run effectively on the ground, then in the coming years, a major improvement in the ground water level can be seen in many parts of Madhya Pradesh. Especially in those areas where the drinking water crisis worsens every summer, this model can prove to be a relief.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has also described the campaign as a movement related to public participation and said that water conservation is not just a government responsibility but is a matter related to the existence of the society. The government aims to reduce future water scarcity through permanent water structures and provide adequate irrigation facilities to farmers.
