The central government has banned the export of sugar. This ban will last till September 2026. This decision has been taken to stop the increase in sugar prices. India ranks second in sugar production. Brazil is at first position. Brazil alone supplies 20 to 25 percent of the sugar supplied to the world. Talking about India’s figures, India’s share in the worldwide sugar supply is 19 percent. India alone produces 35.5 million tonnes of sugar every year.

It is not for nothing that India ranks second in the production of sugar. Some selected states of the country produce it the most. This is the reason why India supplies sugar to more than 80 countries of the world. Now the question is which states supply the most sugar to the country, to which countries does India supply sugar and how is it prepared?

India ranks second in the world in sugar production, but when it comes to the states of the country, the record is in the name of Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh is the highest sugar producing state among the selected states of the country. After UP, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh produce sugar.

The status of Uttar Pradesh can be understood from the fact that this state alone produces 50 percent of the sugar produced in the country. There are some reasons behind giving maximum sugar to the country. The weather here and the sugar industry are the biggest reasons for this.

Sugar is prepared from sugarcane. For good yield of sugarcane, a temperature of 20 to 35 degrees Celsius is necessary. Apart from this, rainfall of 75 to 150 cm in a year, fertile and drained soil together increases its yield. It needs enough sunlight. Cold and dry weather is required for ripening and harvesting. Due to availability of this environment for the cultivation of sugarcane in Uttar Pradesh, it is ahead in the production of sugar.

More than 80 countries buy sugar from India. Indonesia is the country which is the largest buyer of Indian sugar. Many countries including Bangladesh, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Somalia are included in the list of buyers.

How Brazil has gone ahead in terms of supplying maximum sugar to the world. Now let us understand this. Brazil is at the forefront in the production of sugarcane. Produces 40 percent sugarcane alone. The tropical climate and fertile soil here is a boon for it, which is considered ideal for sugarcane cultivation.

Due to strong earnings from sugar, the government has made huge investments in transportation, port facilities and exports. As a result, doing business internationally became easier. Brazil is the largest producer of not only sugar but also ethanol. Farmers get double benefit by making sugar and ethanol from sugarcane.

How is sugar made from sugarcane?

After harvesting from the fields, sugarcane juice is extracted through big machines. Its remaining fiber is called bagasse which is used in generating electricity. Sugarcane juice is purified. Due to this the dirt settles down and the clean juice comes up. The clear juice is heated and after mixing it with thick juice, sugar crystals are formed. Crystals and thick liquid are separated through the machine. After this, it is dried and cleaned, packed and sent to the markets.
