Story of Ganga’s descent (Maa Ganga Ki Katha)

According to the legend, sixty thousand sons of King Sagar had insulted Maharishi Kapil Muni. Due to this the sage became angry and burnt them to ashes in the fire of his penance. Due to this reason all the sons died untimely. Not only this, without cremation their souls were wandering for salvation. Later, Bhagiratha was born in the lineage of King Sagar.

When he came to know about the plight of his ancestors, he resolved to bring Mother Ganga from heaven to earth and save his ancestors. After this, Bhagiratha performed severe penance and pleased Lord Brahma. Pleased with the penance of Bhagiratha, Lord Brahma gave a boon of sending Ganga to earth. The day Mother Ganga came to earth was the Dashami Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha.

It was only when the stream of Mother Ganga collided with the bones of King Sagar’s sons that everyone attained salvation. The festival of Ganga Dussehra is celebrated in memory of the incarnation of Mother Ganga and this divine event.
