Income tax department
The Income Tax Department has now made Aadhaar-based OTP verification mandatory for updating mobile number or email ID on e-filing portal. This step has been taken so that there is no change in the profile of any taxpayers without permission. Now only the person who owns that account, will be able to change his contact details. With this, efforts will be stopped by those who make someone’s profile or divert information.
Now Aadhaar also compulsory for PAN card
From July 1, it has been made mandatory for PAN card (PAN) to give Aadhaar number and get it verified by OTP. According to the new rule of CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes), now the same PAN application will be valid in which the Aadhaar number is correctly recorded and online verified. Its purpose is to make the tax system transparent, prevent duplicate PAN and strengthen digital ecosystem.
Till now it was not necessary to give Aadhaar for PAN card. Identity card and birth certificate also used to work. But now the rules have changed. That is, it will be necessary to give Aadhaar number to make PAN card and verify through OTP. This entire process is available online on the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department.
What are the rules for those who already have PAN?
If you already have a PAN card but you have not yet linked to Aadhaar, then you have time till 31 December 2025. If you did not link PAN-Aadhaar till the scheduled time, then your Pan will be innocent. Also, a fine of Rs 1000 can be imposed on delay in linking.
Why is the government making this change?
- Tax evasion and preventing fake pan card
- Digital KYC promotes
- Tax returns and refund process fast and safe
- Powering “Digital India” and “e-governance”
According to a CBDT official, verification of information related to Aadhaar will ensure that there is only one legitimate PAN card in the name of a person.
