It’s Ambani vs Musk in space: Reliance to build satellite network to take on Starlink

Kolkata: Mukesh Ambani has set his sight on space. Reliance Industries is gearing up to enter the satellite internet business with an investment running into billions of dollars. Ambani’s vehicle for this ambitious project will be Jio Platforms and the company is working to set up a Low Earth Orbit satellite network. This is going to pit Ambani in direct competition with Elon Musk‘s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. After redrawing the rules of the telecom sector in India, Mukesh Ambani is going to set up a Satellite Communication network.

Jio Platforms, the launch pad

According to media reports, Ambani will use Jio Platforms as the vehicle for his project. Ambani wants to emerge as one of the world’s leading players, specifically within the Low Earth Orbit segment. The project has been accorded such a status in the group that Ambani himself is overseeing it. According to reports, ‘Six Teams’ in Mission Mode and Working on a ‘War Footing’. Ambani has set up six teams to fast track the project and they are working on technical aspects such as satellite design, launching, payloads and user terminals. Over the past few months, the group has held numerous meetings with foreign satellite technology firms. The target is to deploy satellites in two to four years.
