BJP’s lucky mascot: How rise of PM Modi witnessed the surge of saffron numbers in state assemblies

New Delhi: Ever since Prime Narendra Modi formed the Government in 2014 in the Centre, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has observed a steady rise across the states as well. The number of MLAs in states and union territories has only increased between September 2013, when he was made the party’s PM candidate, and May 2026, when the party won West Bengal and Assam with landslide victories.

From 773 BJP MLAs to 1798 MLAs

According to data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the party’s legislative footprint has expanded more than 2 times ever since September 2013 till this month. While in 2013, the party had 773 MLAs across the country, by May 2026, the number of party MLAs had increased to 1798.

Notably, in 2013, there were only 2 BJP MLAs in September 2013, which increased to 8 by this month. Arunachal Pradesh witnessed a massive increase in MLAs during this period. While there were just 3 in 2013, the number increased to 46 by May 2026. Assam had just 7 in September 2013. It surged to 82, among the seats that were declared till today, even as the counting is still on.

In the West Bengal Assembly, the results of which are being declared today, there were no MLAs in September 2013. However, so far, 91 BJP candidates were declared when this report was set to be published. The party is currently leading in 115 seats, meaning the number of MLAs from the saffron party would rise further in the state as the counting goes on.

Massive increase in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh witnessed a massive increase in BJP MLAs during the same period. While in September 2013, there were only 47 MLAs, the figure increased to 257 by this month. Gujarat and Rajasthan too witnessed a massive increase in the number of MLAs between September 2013 and May 4, 2026. While in Gujarat, the number of MLAs increased from 115 to 161 during the same period, in Rajasthan, the number of BJP MLAs surged from 78 on September 2013 to 118 till this day.
