Thalapathy Vijay’s real name is Joseph Vijay Chandrashekhar. Born on June 22, 1974 in Chennai, Vijay, apart from being an actor, is also a singer, dancer and now a leader. Father S.A. Chandrashekhar was a well-known director of Tamil cinema and mother Shobha was a singer. This is the reason why he got associated with films at a very young age.
His film career started as a child artist with the film ‘Vetri’ released in 1984. After doing some similar films, he worked in Rajinikanth’s film ‘Naan Sigappu Manithan’ and then played the lead role in the film ‘Nalaiya Theerpu’ in 1992. How did Joseph Vijay Chandrashekhar become Thalapathy?
Despite his original name being Joseph Vijay Chandrashekhar, he started his career with the name Vijay. Vijay’s popularity in films increased so much that he became a superstar. Vijay, who was rapidly moving towards success, was named Thalapathi by his fans. Gradually he came to be known by this name. In Tamil language, Thalapathi means commander or leader.
Vijay became increasingly popular with this name, so he changed his name to Ilaya Thalapathi. It means young commander or young leader. For many decades, Vijay was known as Ilaiah Thalapathi and he continued to dominate the Tamil film industry.

The work of converting Ilaya Thalapathy to Thalapathy was done only in 2017. In 2017, director Atlee decided to change his surname to Thalapathi. When the first-look poster of Mersal was released, he was credited as Thalapathy. His fans were very happy to see this change and celebrated the occasion like a festival. With time, Vijay became a star and his fans started seeing him as a political leader. He gave up his shy image. Made fans crazy with his brilliant public speeches on many social issues.

Entry into politics from films
Vijay, who has maintained his dominance in films, officially entered politics in February 2024 and announced the party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). He had already said that he will not contest the Lok Sabha elections, the focus will be on the 2026 Assembly elections and that is what happened.

On announcing his entry into politics, he had made it clear that he was leaving cinema. The first rally of the party was held on 27 October 2024 at Vikravandi in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu. The rally was historic. A huge crowd gathered. Vijay targeted the parties that divide people. Not only this, he accused a family of committing fraud in the name of Dravidian model and looting the state.

Last year, there was a stampede at his party rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, and 39 people died. Expressing grief over the incident, Vijay announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each for those killed and Rs 2 lakh each for the injured.
Vijay, who has proved his mettle in acting in films, is proving himself to be the leader of Tamil Nadu politics. The trend figures are confirming this.
