Chennai: With the onset of the Kathiri season (peak summer heat) scheduled for tomorrow, May 4, the Meteorological Department has forecast the possibility of heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu for the next six days. The department has issued alerts for multiple districts from May 4 to May 9.

On May 4, Monday, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely to occur in a few places across Tamil Nadu, as well as in Puducherry and Karaikal regions. Heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds is expected in isolated pockets within the districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruvannamalai, Karur, and Kallakurichi.

With the Kathiri Veyil period expected to begin tomorrow, summer temperatures have already been on the rise over the past few days. A maximum temperature of 41.8°C was recorded today in Vellore. Conversely, a minimum temperature of 21.1°C was recorded in the Madurai Airport area. In the hilly regions, a temperature of 9.7°C was recorded in Kodaikanal. An atmospheric trough extends from South Chhattisgarh to the Comorin Sea, passing through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
