Lucknow. The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has recently made important changes in the smart prepaid meter system to provide relief to electricity consumers, especially lower and middle class families. This decision has provided great convenience to millions of consumers.
Big relief to domestic consumers up to 1 kilowatt
The government has taken a big decision for consumers with domestic electricity connections up to 1 kilowatt. Now even if their balance runs out, their power supply will not be cut off immediately. Rather, they will be given additional time of up to 30 days in which they can recharge. More than 43 lakh consumers have directly benefited from this decision.
What were the rules earlier and why was there a problem?
When smart prepaid meters were implemented in the state, consumers were given only 3 days to clear their balance. After this the power supply would automatically stop. Due to this, especially the domestic consumers of 1 kW and 2 kW were facing a lot of problems. Keeping this in mind, the government took this new decision.
Electricity will not be cut for 30 days: New rule
Under the new system:
- Consumers up to 1 KW will get 30 days extra time
- During this time they can recharge and keep the power on
- If not recharged within 30 days, power supply will automatically shut off
Emergency credit facility for consumers up to 2 KW
Relief has also been given for domestic consumers of more than 1 kW and up to 2 kW.
- Such consumers will get a grace period of at least 3 days.
- Or the electricity will remain on till the negative balance is up to ₹ 200.

- But as soon as the balance reaches -₹200, the power will be automatically cut off.
More than 67 lakh consumers got benefits
More than 67 lakh consumers of the state have benefited from this decision.
By department:
- A total of 83 lakh smart meters have been installed
- Of these, about 43 lakh (1 kW) and
- 24 lakh (2 kW) consumers covered
How will the emergency utility bill be deducted?
In the new system, the amount of electricity that will be used during the emergency period will be:
- It will be automatically disconnected in the next recharge

Electricity will not be cut during these times
In the new system, some specific times have been fixed when electricity will not be cut:
- 6 pm to 8 am
- sunday
- second saturday
- public holidays
During this period, even if the balance is exhausted or negative, the power supply will continue. However, the amount of electricity used during this period will be deducted in the next recharge.
