Uttar Pradesh: Bijnor woman shoots live-in partner after years of relentless physical and sexual abuse

New Delhi: A body was found in a forested area near Julahapur village in Uttar Pradesh‘s Bijnor on April 29, later identified as local resident Anuj Kumar. While the bullet-riddled body initially triggered a murder probe, the investigation soon revealed a disturbing story of alleged abuse and desperation behind the killing.

As the investigation intensified, SP (Rural) Prakash Kumar and his teams began looking into the victim’s personal life and suspicion quickly shifted toward Shobha Rani, the woman who had been living with Anuj since 2024. Under questioning, the facade of a domestic life crumbled as Shobha reportedly broke down, confessing to the killing and detailing the horrific abuse she had endured at his hands.

Why Shobha killed her husband?

Shobha’s journey into this nightmare began after her separation from her husband of twelve years in 2023. And looking for a fresh start, she moved in with Anuj, but the relationship quickly turned toxic.

She alleged that Anuj was not just a partner but a predator who used blackmail as a weapon. According to her statement, he recorded private videos of her to extort money and force her into sexual acts, physically assaulting her whenever she dared to resist.

A mother’s breaking point

The abuse allegedly extended beyond Shobha. She told investigators that Anuj had harboured ill intentions toward her ten-year-old daughter. The situation was further aggravated by Anuj’s criminal history, as he had previously been jailed for attempting to molest Shobha’s younger sister. For Shobha, the fear wasn’t just for her own life but for the safety of her child.

The situation took a devastating turn on the night of April 28, when Anuj reportedly took her to a cafe before brutally raping and assaulting her in the village. Shobha initially contemplated of taking her own life but the thought of leaving her daughter unprotected in Anuj’s shadow changed her mind.

She then decided to end Anuj’s life, and with his own pistol, she shot him dead. Police have since recovered the weapon, and Shobha has been remanded to jail following her court appearance. While the law will now take its course, the case has left the community reeling from the grim reality of what was happening behind closed doors.
