Minakshi follows Jaismine to win gold at World Boxing Championships

New Delhi: Minakshi Hooda gave India its second gold medal at the World Boxing Championships in Livepool on Sunday after Jaismine Lamboria claimed the country’s first medal at the top event.

A day after Jaismine outboxed Paris Olympics silver medallist Poland’s Julia Szeremeta of Poland in the 57kg final, Minakshi outpunched Paris Games bronze medal winner Kazakshtan’s Nazym Kyzaibay in the 48kg title round.

Like Jaismine, Minakshi won by a comprehensive 4-1 margin as Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) and Pooja Rani (80kg) claimed silver and bronze medals respectively in non-Olympic weight categories.

Minakshi and Jaismine entered an elite list of Indian boxing world champions, led by six-time winner Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), two-time champ Nikhat Zareen (2022 and 2023), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), Lekha KC (2006), Nitu Ghanghas (2023), Lovlina Borgohain (2023) and Saweety Boora (2023).
