In Chhattisgarh, the state government under the leadership of Vishnu Dev Sai is making continuous efforts for the welfare of the workers. In the last 2 years and 4 months, approximately Rs 800 crore has been transferred directly to the accounts of workers through various schemes. The government is providing food to the workers for Rs 5.
Raipur, 30 April 2026/ Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai, many schemes are being run by the Chhattisgarh government for the betterment of workers and their families. Through these schemes, financial assistance is being provided continuously to improve the social and economic condition of the workers. The schemes are being successfully implemented through all the three divisions of the Labor Department – Chhattisgarh Building and Other Construction Workers Board, Chhattisgarh Unorganized Workers State Social Security Board and Chhattisgarh Labor Welfare Board. The result of this is that in the last 02 years 04 months, about Rs 800 crore has been transferred to the accounts of workers through various schemes through DBT. This year, under Atal Utkrisht Shiksha Yojana, 200 children of workers will be admitted in excellent private schools of the state.
Why is Labor Day celebrated?
Labor Day is celebrated all over the world. The main objective of celebrating International Labor Day or Labor Day on 1 May is to take a pledge for workers’ rights, social justice and better working conditions. This day is also celebrated to remember the contributions of workers and honor their struggles. This day is celebrated in memory of the violence that took place during the workers’ protest in Haymarket Square in Chicago in the year 1886, where many workers demanded an 8-hour working day. In 1889, the Second International Organization declared May 1 as International Labor Day. The purpose of celebrating this day is to ensure the rights of workers, promote social justice and raise voice for better working conditions. Celebrating Labor Day in India started in 1923 from Chennai (Madras). Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, President of the Constituent Assembly of India, reduced the working time of workers from 12 hours to 8 hours. Apart from this, he provided the facility of maternity leave to women.
Chhattisgarh government is running many schemes for laborers.
- Chief Minister Shri Sai believes that the Labor Department is a very important department, which can bring positive changes in the lives of workers on a large scale. He instructed the officials that along with effective implementation of the schemes, surprise inspection of industrial units should also be done through technology, so that the protection of workers’ rights can be ensured. These efforts of the state government are giving a new direction to the social and economic empowerment of workers in Chhattisgarh.
- State Labor Minister Shri Lakhanlal Dewangan says that under the good governance of Vishnu Dev government in the state, the child of a laborer will no longer be a laborer. Many welfare schemes are being run by the Labor Department in the interests of workers. Mainly, Chief Minister Naunihal Scholarship Scheme, Minimata Mahtari Jatan Yojana, Chief Minister Labor Tool Kit Scheme, Chief Minister Noni Babu Meritorious Education Promotion Scheme, Assistance Fund Scheme for free uniforms and book copies for the children of construction workers, Excellent Sports Incentive Scheme for the children of construction workers, Chief Minister Construction Workers Housing Assistance Scheme, Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Shram Anna Yojana are being run. The Prime Minister of the country, Shri Narendra Modi is of the opinion that every possible effort is being made by the Commerce, Industry and Labor Department of the state in this direction. A provision of Rs 256 crore has been made for the Labor Department in the budget for the current financial year 2026-27.

Labor Minister Shri Lakhanlal Dewangan says that the thinking of Vishnu Dev’s government is that every hand who gets work should get a fair price for it and every stomach should get food, this is the ideal policy of our government. The state government is committed to implementing this policy. Under Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Shram Anna Yojana, 38 food centers are operated in different districts of the state. Under this scheme, hot food, pulses, rice, vegetables and pickles are being provided to the workers for Rs 5, which is being expanded to all the districts in the current financial year 2026-27. The amount for labor housing has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh per house. Similarly, the amount of e-rickshaw will also be increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh.
More than 33 lakh 14 thousand workers registered
- It is noteworthy that more than 33 lakh 14 thousand workers have been registered under the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board since September 5, 2008. 26 schemes are being run by the Board and 60 labor classes are notified. Rs 315 crore were received from one percent cess (cess) in the year 2025-26, while a total cess of Rs 2,808 crore has been collected since the formation of the division. Till March 2026, Rs 2,558 crore has been spent on various schemes.
- A budget provision of Rs 10 crore has been made in the current financial year for industrial health and safety. The main responsibility of the Employees’ State Insurance Services under the Labor Department is to provide medical benefits to the workers and their family members. A provision of Rs 76 crore 38 lakh has been made by the state government for Employees’ State Insurance Services.
