Uttar Pradesh: Wedding guests fight over ‘cooler’ air, 1 dead in Azamgarh

New Delhi: A wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh turned tragic, after 1 person died and 4 others were grievously injured in clashes at the wedding party. The wedding was being held in the Indira Nagar area under Jiyanpur police station on Tuesday night. The dispute reportedly started over a trivial matter.

Direction of desert cooler led to dispute

According to a report in the Times of India, when the ‘jaimal’ ritual was being performed at the wedding, some people from the groom’s side and others from the bride’s side engaged in a verbal argument over the direction of the desert cooler. Both sides wanted the cooler to be turned towards them so that the air would keep them comfortable in the hot weather.

However, soon after both parties started a physical fight, which turned violent in no time. According to the police, 1 person, 26-year-old Amir Chandra Sahani, died during the clash. Several others who were seriously injured were rushed to hospital. Currently 4 people are under treatment, said Azamgarh ASP (Rural) Chirag Jain.

Complaint filed, several held: Police

According to the Azamgarh Police, they have detained some people from the wedding, who were part of the clashes. An FIR has also been filed by the deceased’s father and investigations are currently going on in the matter.

In order to maintain law and order in the area, a huge police force has been deployed in the area where the clash occurred. Raids are also being carried out around the city to nab those involved in the clashes and killing of Sahani.

While Amir Chandra Sahani died on the spot, Rajkumar Sahani, Abhilash Sahani and Sahil Yadav, all from the groom’s side, were seriously injured. The CO Sagdi area and the police personnel from Jiyanpur area reached the spot after receiving information about the clashes. Eyewitnesses said that a stampede-like situation occurred at the wedding function, after guests started engaging in physical altercation.
