Hyderabad: Vet extracts and sells blood of stray dogs, keeps them in inhuman conditions; welfare group urges probe

New Delhi: A veterinarian in Telangana has been alleged of committing the heinous crime of illegally capturing stray dogs and extracting their blood without any unauthorisation. The person is reportedly associated with a pet care hospital in Hyderabad’s Shaikpet and sold the extracted blood to pet owners, charging between Rs 18,000 and Rs 25,000 per transfusion. The incident has shocked the people of the city and has raised serious questions about the safety of the street dogs.

Dogs kept in inhuman condition

According to a report by The New Indian Express citing sources, the accused captured the stray dogs from several areas in Hyderabad. The dogs lives in deplorable conditions within the facility and were deprived of food, water and proper medical care. The accused extracted blood from them and sold it to pet owners in need of transfusions. The perpetrator allegedly had no consent or authorisation to do so.

People for Animals takes note of the incident

An unlicensed blood bank was allegedly operated at the hospital which violates the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and other regulations in the field of veterinary practice. The People for Animals (PFA), after receiving multiple complaints, has reportedly taken up the issue. It has filed a formal complaint with the Animal Husbandry department, and the Veterinary Council of India and the State Drug Control Administration have also been urged to probe the issue on an immediate basis.

Recently, in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal, over 30 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned, and most of them died.
In the incident which took place in the Shyamla Hills area, more than 30 dogs were allegedly poisoned within the Ansal Apartments complex in the VIP zone. Almost all of those dogs reportedly died, while several others were in critical condition. In recent times, the stray dogs in the country have come under repeated attacks.
