MILWAUKEE (AP) – Sal Frelick’s solo home run ended the Milwaukee Brewers’ seven-game home-run drought as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-2 on Tuesday night.
Tyler Black contributed significantly, going 3 for 5 with three RBIs during the game.
The Brewers broke open the contest by scoring eight runs in the sixth inning against reliever Andrew Hoffmann, whose earned run average increased from 2.38 to 8.49 as a result of the offensive onslaught.
Frelick’s Impact and Team Performance
Frelick provided the Brewers with a pivotal lead when he hit a 396-foot home run in the second inning off pitcher Merrill Kelly (1-2). This marked Milwaukee’s first home run since Brice Turang hit a two-run shot against Miami’s Sandy Alcantara on April 18.
This seven-game stretch without a home run represented the Brewers’ longest since August 1999, when they went a franchise-record 13 consecutive games without hitting a homer. The Chicago White Sox also experienced a similar seven-game stretch without a home run from April 5-11 of this year, according to Sportradar.
Diamondbacks’ Response and Game Dynamics
Arizona’s Ildemaro Vargas extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the eighth inning, marking a notable achievement in his season. If counting games from 2025, Vargas has an impressive 24-game hitting streak, tying him for the fourth-longest single-season streak in Diamondbacks history.
Milwaukee initially extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning with a two-out single from Joey Ortiz. However, the Diamondbacks narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the fifth inning when James McCann drove in two runs after Chad Patrick (2-1) walked the bases loaded. Despite this, Patrick limited Arizona to just that one hit in five innings while also issuing five walks.
Brewers’ Dominance in the Sixth Inning
The game took a decisive turn in the sixth inning when the Brewers’ first eight batters reached base, thanks to seven singles and a walk. Key contributions included two-run singles from Contreras and Jake Bauers, as well as a two-run double from Hamilton, which highlighted the Brewers’ offensive prowess.
Jake Woodford closed the game with three innings of relief, securing his first save of the season.
Looking Ahead
As the series continues, Eduardo Rodríguez (2-0, 2.89 ERA) is set to pitch for Arizona, while Brandon Sproat (0-1, 6.45 ERA) will take the mound for Milwaukee on Wednesday night.
