Madhya Pradesh: Family forced to clean ambulance as accident victim lies writhing in pain, video surfaces

Katni: A shameful incident has been reported from Katni district of Madhya Pradesh wherein a family was forced to clean ambulance while their patient, who was an accident victim, was writhing in pain. It is alleged that that injured patient kept to wait as the family was made to was 108 ambulance at the district hospital. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

The incident has exposed the insensitive face of the healthcare system in the state. It is alleged that 108 ambulance staff forced the family of an injured patient to wash the ambulance, ignoring the patient’s condition.

Victim made to wait for ambulance cleaning

According to reports, Rahul Barman (32), a resident of Karela in Barhi area of Katni, was injured in a road accident and was brought to the district hospital in an ambulance. Following primary treatment, he was referred to Jabalpur due to his critical condition. It was allegedly during this time an ambulance staff member identified as Mohit, asked the patient’s relatives to clean the ambulance with inside the hospital premises.

In the video that has now gone viral, Mohit can apparently be seen standing at the spot while the cleaning was being done by the accident victim’s family. Questions are now being asked whether the families at Katni district hospital will now act as cleaning staff before their loved one are provided treatment.

Serious questions on healthcare system

The ambulance staff’s act of making relatives do carrying out cleaning reflects extreme insensitivity and negligence in the system. The 108 emergency ambulance service, which was meant to save lives, now seems to be a symbol of carelessness and bereft of human values.

Whether the accused staff is taken to task for the insensitive act or the matter will be covered up remains to be seen. The incident is not only shameful, but also raises serious questions on the entire healthcare system.
