AAP has demanded disqualification of its 7 Rajya Sabha MPs who joined BJP. Sanjay Singh has submitted a petition to the Chairman calling it a violation of the anti-defection law. The party has also warned of legal action in this matter.
New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded disqualification of its 7 Rajya Sabha MPs, who recently left the party and joined BJP. In this regard, senior AAP MP Sanjay Singh has submitted a petition to Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan on Sunday.
Let us tell you that on April 24, 7 MPs including Raghav Chadha and Harbhajan Singh had left AAP. Defending his move, Raghav Chadha had said, ‘According to the Constitution, if two-thirds of the MPs of a party merge with another party, then it is justified.’ But AAP has rejected this argument. The party says that ‘the rule of defection of two-thirds members does not apply to Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, hence this step of the MPs has no legal validity.’
In a press conference on this issue, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, ‘The action of 7 MPs leaving the party is against the anti-defection law. The Supreme Court has made it clear in several decisions, including cases related to Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh, that such defection can become a ground for cancellation of membership. If necessary, we will also go to court regarding this matter.
‘This is a betrayal of the Constitution of India’
Sanjay Singh further said, ‘These MPs were selected by AAP. But later he decided to leave the party and join BJP. This is a big betrayal of the people of Punjab and the Constitution of India. Besides, he also rejected the rumors that some other MLAs of Punjab are also in touch with BJP.
