The PM added that violence had no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.
The post came hours after President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, First Lady Melania and other top White House officials were evacuated from the White House Correspondent’s dinner, which was underway at Washington Hilton in the US capital. The evacuations happened after shots were heard from an adjacent room where the US President was present, along with other top officials of the White House.
There were no injuries reported in the shooting incident. All the dignitaries, including the President were unharmed, said security personnel.
Suspect in custody, President unharmed
According to reports the US Secret Services acted swiftly in the matter. They detained the shooter within minutes of the attack. President Trump himself praised the security service personnel at a press conference held immediately after the shooting incident.
President Trump himself shared the photograph of the suspect who was detained in the aftermath of the shooting. The photograph was shared on his social media handle, ‘Truth Social’. He appealed for unity in the country in the wake of the shooting incident.
Trump said at the presser, “In light of this evening’s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts to resolving our differences peacefully… we had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives. Those words are interchangeable, perhaps, but maybe they’re not. But yet everybody in that room, a big record-setting crowd… There was a tremendous amount of love and coming together. I watched, and I was very impressed by that.”
Thanking his security personnel, the President said, “But the First Lady and I were taken very well and very quickly rushed off the stage. Vice President JD Vance was here; it was likewise beautifully done… Marco had the same thing. Pete was there. Pete didn’t want any help. He didn’t want anybody to help him… I think you also said that it was very impressive.”
