Mumbai Indians face ‘mission impossible’ to stay alive: Can MI qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?

New Delhi: Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a 103-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2026 ‘El Clasico’ at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 23. The Hardik Pandya-led side has now lost their fifth match of the ongoing season, with their two victories coming against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT).

They are currently placed 8th in the IPL 2026 points table. The star-studded franchise with an elite Indian core has struggled across all three departments. Suryakumar Yadav’s poor run continued in the tournament, while the form of Naman Dhir, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah has added to the team management’s worries.

Suryakumar has scored just 157 runs in 7 matches at an average of 22.43, while Bumrah has also struggled with the ball and only picked up two wickets in the same number of matches. Fans and experts have also criticised captain Hardik Pandya’s decision-making and tactics, while his performance has also not been up to the mark.

In the ongoing 19th edition, Pandya has managed just to score 97 runs in six matches at a poor average of 19. With the ball, the all-rounder has conceded runs at an economy rate of 12.66 and has picked up just 3 wickets.

Rohit Sharma looked in good touch at the top of the order, but sustained a hamstring injury during MI’s match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He has missed the last three games, and his return date is still uncertain.

How can Mumbai Indians qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs?

With seven matches left in the ongoing season, MI now need a near-perfect campaign to finish in the top 4. In the 10-team format of the IPL, sides with 16 points have qualified for the playoffs in the previous few seasons, including 2022, 2023 and 2025.

To qualify for the 2026 playoffs, the five-time IPL champions need to win six matches out of the seven to reach 16 points, which looks very unlikely with their current form. After losing against CSK, skipper Pandya said that the team management will have a chat and then they will decide about making some changes to the playing XII.
