World Cup Winners Spain Return to Heroes’ Welcome in Madrid, Set to Meet PM Pedro Sánchez – Watch

Spain played their best football in the final and registered a one-sided 1-0 defeat against the three-time champions. Spain moved the ball with clinical precision, keeping Argentina in their own half. Argentina were in chasing mode as Spain didn’t give them a chance to attack. Spain’s solid defence kept Lionel Messi in check and he failed to register a shot till the 117th minute.

A day after defeating the 2022 World Cup winners, Spain returned to Madrid to a heroes’ welcome. The World Cup-winning team will meet Spain’s royals and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez before taking part in a victory parade.

 

More than a million people are expected to be part of the celebrations. “Even though there were thousands and thousands of people on the streets last night, there were practically no incidents in the city. We’re getting everything ready for tonight and the musical events should start at Cibeles from about 6pm, with the parade scheduled to start at 7pm – but all this is depends on various factors … The thing we’re focusing on is how to celebrate and greet a team that will live for ever in our memory,” Madrid’s Mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida, told Radio Nacional de España. 

Spain’s journey to title win

Rodri-led Spain made a sluggish start against Cape Verde as the debutants held them to a 0-0 draw.   bounced back with a 4-0 win against Saudi Arabia in their second game. They defeated Uruguay 1-0 in their last league stage game.

Spain registered a comfortable 3-0 win against Austria in the round of 32. They ended Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup campaign by defeating Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16. Spain edged past Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-final.

Spain defeated France, the runners-up of the 2022 FIFA WC, to qualify for the final. A one-sided win over Argentina in the final propelled Spain to their second World Cup title.
