Besides, the eligibility criteria have also been relaxed, due to which now final year undergraduate and postgraduate students will also be able to apply. The age limit has been increased from 18 to 25 years. The government’s aim is that more and more youth can gain practical experience along with studies and become better prepared for employment.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has announced important changes in the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS), which will provide better opportunities to youth to gain practical experience before employment. Under the scheme, interns will now get a stipend of Rs 9,000 per month, of which 90% will be borne by the government. Earlier this amount was Rs 5,000 per month. Apart from this, additional financial assistance of Rs 6,000 will be given to the intern in two installments.
change in age limit
The most important change has been made in the eligibility criteria. Now candidates in the age group of 18 to 25 years can apply for this scheme, whereas earlier this limit was 21 to 24 years. Along with this, final year undergraduate and postgraduate students have also been included in the scheme. However, it will be mandatory for such students to provide No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their institute, to ensure that the internship will not hinder their studies.
This scheme gives students the opportunity to work in industries while studying, so that they can connect their theoretical studies with real experience. The government believes that this will increase the employability of the youth and they will be better prepared for jobs. The scheme has been designed in line with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP), with emphasis on experience-based learning and industry exposure. Under this, emerging areas like Global Capability Centers (GCCs), renewable energy and semiconductors have also been included.
