Ancient Shiva Temple Madhya Pradesh: ‘Kaknamath Temple’, located in Sihoniya area of Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, is a confluence of architectural wonders and mysteries. The most interesting thing about this temple is that no adhesive material like cement, plaster or lime was used in its construction. Historical background of the temple
According to historians, this temple was built by King Kirtiraj of Kachhapaghat (Kachhwaha) dynasty in the 11th century. The king’s wife Kakanvati was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. This grand temple was built as per his wish, hence it was named ‘Kakanmath’. In those days, when modern technology was lacking, the skill of the sculptors who carried heavy stones to such heights and carved amazing sculptures on them is unforgettable.

Have demons built the temple?
There is an interesting folk tale prevalent here. People believe that this temple was not built by humans, but by demons on the orders of Lord Shiva in a single night. According to the story, hearing the sound of someone grinding flour early in the morning, the demons left their work incomplete and that is why the peak of the temple still looks incomplete. Although there is no evidence for this story, the arrangement of stones that appears to be floating in the air further strengthens this mystery.
Current status and importance
Some parts of the temple have been damaged, yet its grandeur has not diminished in the least. The rare sculptures here are currently preserved in museums. Today it is not only a religious center for devotees but also a popular destination for history lovers and tourists.
