11th Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas
Kedarnath is worshipped as the 11th Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is also the first of the Panch Kedars and one of the four sacred Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. The temple remains open for six months during the summer, while in winter, worship continues at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath.
The opening ceremony of Kedarnath Dham is marked by several traditional rituals. The Panchmukhi Chal Utsav Vigraha Doli of Baba Kedar arrives from Ukhimath, accompanied by special pujas and aarti. The chief priest (Rawal) performs Havan, Yagna, and Abhishek, while the doors are opened with the sound of conches and Vedic chanting. The first Aarti of Baba Kedar is performed immediately after, with hundreds of devotees participating in the divine moment
Kedarnath is deeply rooted in mythology
The history of Kedarnath is deeply rooted in mythology. It is believed that during the Dwapar era, the Pandavas visited Kedarnath to seek forgiveness for the sins committed during the Mahabharata war. Lord Shiva appeared before them in the form of a buffalo, and later, the Pandavas established the Jyotirlinga here. The sanctum sanctorum houses a unique triangular Shivalinga, considered highly sacred.
Legends also say that in the Satyayuga, sages Nara and Narayana performed penance here, making Kedarnath a timeless center of devotion. The temple stands on the banks of the Mandakini River, surrounded by the snow-clad peaks of the Meru-Sumeru mountains, making it a breathtaking spiritual destination.
Char Dham Yatra has officially begun
With the opening of Kedarnath Dham, the Char Dham Yatra has officially begun. Tomorrow, the doors of Badrinath Dham will open at 6:15 AM, completing the cycle of all four shrines. Thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit these sacred sites over the next six months, seeking blessings and spiritual peace.
The grand decoration, the presence of the Chief Minister, and the overwhelming devotion of pilgrims made today’s opening ceremony a truly historic and spiritual event. Kedarnath Dham continues to inspire faith, devotion, and reverence, standing as a symbol of India’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
