According to the calendar of the Reserve Bank of India, banks will remain closed in some areas on Monday, April 20, 2026, due to local festivals, such as Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. Therefore banks will remain closed in Karnataka. However, banks in other states will remain open and function normally. Bank holidays in India differ from state to state, because each place has its own festivals and special days. Apart from this, all banks whether government or private remain closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.
What is Basava Jayanti?
Basava Jayanti is a festival mainly celebrated in Karnataka. It is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Saint Basavanna, the 12th century poet, thinker and founder of the Lingayat tradition. Basavanna had talked about ending caste discrimination in the society and giving equal opportunity to everyone. He also built a spiritual and thinking center named Anubhav Mandap, where saints, thinkers and people associated with religion used to meet and discuss.

If we look ahead, there are some more bank holidays in April. Banks will remain closed in Tripura on 21st April due to Gariya Puja. Apart from this, banks will remain closed across the country on 25th April, the fourth Saturday, and 26th April will be a general holiday on Sunday. Bank branch services like check clearing, cash deposit and demand draft will not be available during these holidays.

However, on some national days like Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti, there is a simultaneous holiday in the entire country.
