New Delhi: An Indian software engineer living in London who missed a seat at an IIT has gone viral on social media after he shared his journey. The guy identified as Amit Dutta secured a position at Meta with a reported salary of Rs 1.7 crore.
Dutta took to his Instagram and while recounting his career’s high and low phases from failing to crack the IIT entrance exam in 2018 to securing a senior position at Meta. He wrote while his classmates were posting their IIT acceptances back then, he was sitting in a campus that most people have never heard of, but he didn’t see that as a setback rather he described that as a turning point in his thinking as he decided something no one could have ever though of.
He added, “But I made a decision that changed everything. I stopped mourning the college I didn’t get and started becoming the engineer no college could take credit for.”
Fails Microsoft internship
Life do serve him lemons as he shares that in 2021 he faced another setback when he failed to crack a Microsoft internship. He wrote, “I prepared for weeks and gave it everything, but I was rejected. That rejection broke something in me, but it also rebuilt something.” He decided to prepare again with more determination, and his efforts paid off as he secured a full-time role at Google in 2022.

Amit noted, “I could have coasted, most people do, but I had a chip on my shoulder the size of that IIT rejection letter.” Over the next two years, he focused on upskilling himself and visiting different countries for business trips. He said, “The kid who couldn’t crack IIT was now solving problems across continents.”
London became major breakthrough
The turning point in his career came when he was approached by Meta for a role in its London office. He shared the details of the interview, recalling, “Six rounds, the hardest interviews of my life, and I cleared all six.” He eventually moved to London, achieving a milestone which he never believed as a tier 2 college student.
