New Delhi: In a shocking incident reported from central Delhi’s Golf Link area, a liquor businessman and his family were robbed of jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh. The culprit, their own househelp and some of his associates. The family was held hostage at knifepoint by the accused, said the Delhi Police officials.
Businessman owns liquor company
The businessman who was robbed has been identified as Ashok Chawla, owner of a liquor company. The Police said that the robbery happened on Thursday evening at around 6 pm, when the elderly Chawla couple, their daughter-in-law and a child were present in their Golf Link home.
At least 6 people barged into their house and confined the family into a room. They then forced them to hand over their valuables. Sources said that the victims were threatened and made to wait in one room, as the thieves searched the entire house.
The family said that the accused did not attempt to harm any of them. Later when the thieves left with the valuables, the family managed to free themselves.
Initial investigations revealed that the crime was facilitated by the househelp Sushil. He allegedly helped the thieves enter the house, said police officials. He is suspected to be the main conspirator in the case.
The police said that the accused had prior knowledge about the house and also the valuables in the house. He might have recced the entire house, before planning the robbery with his accomplices, said investigators.
Robbery was pre-planned
According to the police, the robbery was pre-planned. CCTV footage from outside the house, shows several people waiting outside the house. They were waiting for traffic to clear and then entered in a coordinated manner. Six people entered the house, said police.
According to the investigators, the accused times their entry in such a way that their entry would not raise suspicion in the busy residential area. Police said that a case of robbery has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and teams are searching for the accused.
CCTV footage is being scanned and police are trying to trace the entry and exit routes used by the thieves. They are trying to establish how they managed to exit the area, without raising any suspicion. They are also probing the background of Sushil, the domestic help of the family. They are trying to know from where he was hired.
Raids are being carried out in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to apprehend the accused, said officials. THe Delhi Police has alerted their counterparts in these states regarding the suspects. So far however, no arrests have been made in the case.
