Sunrisers Hyderabad Sign Former MI Pacer As David Payne’s Replacement

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have roped in Gerald Coetzee as David Payne’s replacement for the remainder of IPL 2026.   who played two games in IPL 2026, has been ruled out due to an ankle injury.

Interestingly, Payne SRH had signed Payne as a replacement player for Jack Edwards. And Edwards’ replacement has now been ruled out of the season. He made his IPL debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the opening game of the season. He scalped two wickets in the season. He went for 35 runs in his two overs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and went wicketless.

Coetzee has played for Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT). He made his IPL debut for MI and scalped 13 wickets in IPL 2024. He joined GT in the IPL 2025 mega-auction and played 4 games for them. He went unsold in the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

Coetzee has played 4 Tests, 14 ODIs and 18 T20Is for South Africa. He hasn’t played a Test match since 2024. He last played an ODI in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

With 2 wins in 5 matches, Sunrisers Hyderabad sit in the fifth position in the IPL 2026 points table. They have 4 points at an NRR of +0.576. The Ishan Kishan-led side kicked off its campaign with a defeat against RCB. SRH defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in their second game.

The IPL 2016 Champions suffered back-to-back defeats against Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings. They returned to winning ways with a victory over Rajasthan Royals.

Kishan will continue to lead till Pat  is available for selection. He was slated to return to India on Friday (April 17), but won’t be available for selection till April 25.

Cummins is recovering from a back issue. He hasn’t played competitive cricket in 2026. The Australia Test captain only played one game in the Ashes 2025/26 and was later ruled out of the T20 World Cup.

Cummins hasn’t played a T20 since IPL 2025. Cummins-led SRH managed 6 wins in IPL 2024 and finished sixth in the IPL 2026 points table.
