Reports: Tesla are set to expand its line in India with three-row SUV next week

New Delhi: Tesla is gearing up to expand its portfolio in India with the introduction of a three-row Model Y L, with reports suggesting the launch might happen as early as next week. The move marks the first new product addition since the brand entered India in 2025 and aims to boost its underwhelming sales in the market.

The Tesla Model Y L is the long-wheelbase, six-seat version of the standard Model Y, made for buyers looking for more space and flexibility. Unlike the five-seater, the trim comes as a three-row setup, targeting family-oriented customers, which is in big demand in the Indian SUV market.

For the extra row, Tesla has stretched the wheelbase by around 150mm, while overall length has also increased. This makes for a more spacious cabin, along with little design changes like the longer roofline and larger rear quarter glass.

How Tesla’s journey in India has been so far

At present, Model Y L is made only at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, which is also the export base for India-bound units. Much like the existing Model Y sold here, the new trim will come as a fully imported model, meaning pricing will continue to be impacted by the country’s high import duties.

For Tesla, the journey in India has been quite a model with the company reportedly selling just above 200 units of the Model Y in 2025, falling short of expectations, which led to discounts to clear initial inventory. The coming of the bigger Model Y L comes as Tesla’s strategy to refresh its line-up and lean towards what the Indian buyers prefer, in place of launching all-new models.

Worldwide, the Model Y L debuted in China last year and was above the standard version, coming with more space and a premium positioning. This could be a unique offering from Tesla, and the bigger Model Y might just gain the traction in India it is looking for.
