According to Garuda Purana…
Garuda Purana says that generally the right to perform the last rites of the deceased goes to his closest male relatives like son, grandson or brother. In earlier times, only the son was considered to have the right to offer funeral pyre. Earlier even daughters did not have the right to offer funeral pyre to their father. As far as the son-in-law is concerned, according to Garuda Purana, traditionally the son-in-law does not have the right to perform the last rites.
Why doesn’t son-in-law perform the last rites of father-in-law?
The main reason for this is said to be social and clan related beliefs. Even today in Hindu tradition, a daughter is considered someone else’s wealth after marriage. It is said that after Kanyadaan, the daughter’s relationship with her husband’s clan and gotra gets linked. Because of this, the son-in-law is not considered a part of the original family of the deceased and is kept away from this religious duty.
However, now with time things are changing in many places. If a son or other close relative is not present in the family, in many communities and families the son-in-law is allowed to perform the last rites, but this is very limited.
