New Delhi: A 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel came into force on Thursday. At the same time, US President Donald Trump signalled that fresh talks between Washington and Tehran could take place as early as this weekend, raising hopes that the ongoing war with Iran may be nearing a resolution.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said Iran had indicated it was willing to refrain from developing nuclear weapons for over two decades. Tehran’s nuclear programme had remained a key point of contention during negotiations held in Islamabad last weekend.
“We’re going to see what happens. But I think we’re very close to making a deal with Iran,” he said.
Later, addressing an event in Las Vegas, Nevada, Trump struck a more optimistic tone, stating that the war “should be ending pretty soon.”
The conflict, which began on February 28 following a joint US-Israeli strike, has resulted in thousands of deaths and triggered a surge in global oil prices.
