Virat Kohli and Test cricket. A story which has entertained cricket lovers across the world including India in the last 13-14 years. But there is a story whose ending still seems incomplete to most of the fans. Virat Kohli has retired from Test cricket, while his fans still wish that he would again target the red ball in the white jersey. This is not expected to happen in international cricket, but can Kohli show his talent again in this format, that too against a star like Rohit Sharma, who himself has retired from this format?
Test match between IPL teams
Shocked, right? It is natural to be surprised because this is not true at the moment but it can be true, all that is needed is to convert a revolutionary idea into reality. This idea is also the brainchild of the same person who changed the game by giving cricket a league like IPL. these are Lalit Modiwho has suggested the idea of IPL to make Test cricket popular again. He has given such an idea that even Modi himself appeared a little scared.
In an interview given on Overlap YouTube channel, Lalit Modi talked about organizing test matches between IPL teams only. But this event is not like any league like IPL but is different from it. Referring to the declining popularity of Test cricket in the interview, Lalit Modi said that it is being experienced well mainly in England and Australia, whereas the situation is not good in other countries. In such a situation, to make the Test format popular again among the new generation, Lalit Modi has suggested matches of this format between IPL teams.
What is Lalit Modi’s idea?
Lalit Modi said that the World Test Championship and Test series between countries should always continue but there should be exhibition Test matches between IPL teams. He said, “Let the IPL teams buy a Test team. You have youth (fans) who bring a loyalty (to the team). I want them to play Test cricket as a team. You keep playing Test matches and WTC between countries. But this (Test cricket) does not get lost, you start with exhibition matches. At least play one match each between all the (IPL) teams before the start of the season (Test season), so that the young fans get used to this format. Look again.”
Will Rohit-Virat really be seen playing Test?
However, this is just Lalit Modi’s idea and there is almost no possibility of it coming off the ground. But the idea of a league like IPL was also Modi’s and he had planned to do it in ODI format about 10 years before its start. So who knows what might happen in the coming years. Still, if such a situation arises in the coming one or two years, then who knows, Virat and Rohit may once again be seen playing Test cricket, that too against each other.
