Los Angeles Angels slugger Jorge Soler commenced a four-game suspension on Wednesday night during a matchup against the New York Yankees.
This suspension follows a reduction in his penalty stemming from a fight with Atlanta Braves pitcher Reynaldo López.
The adjustment to Soler’s punishment, which was originally seven games, occurred earlier in the day through an agreement between Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). The agreement resulted in a three-game reduction of his suspension.
Impact on the Angels
Angels manager Kurt Suzuki expressed disappointment over the suspension, highlighting Soler’s recent performance. “Obviously, Jorgie’s been swinging the bat really hot now, so it’s unfortunate that we have to miss him for four games,” Suzuki stated prior to the Angels’ 5-4 loss to the Yankees. “But, you know, it is what it is and we have to deal with it. And we definitely will be waiting for him to come back.”
Soler, who has been a key player for the Angels this season, was batting .231 with five home runs and 18 RBIs. He recorded a home run in the Angels’ recent victory against the Yankees, where the team hit three consecutive solo homers in the first inning.
Details of the Incident
The confrontation between Soler and López occurred during a game in Anaheim, California, leading to both players being ejected and subsequently suspended. Each player initially faced a seven-game suspension and fines from MLB.
Following their appeals, the MLB and MLBPA reached an agreement that reduced López’s suspension to five games, allowing him to make his next scheduled start against Miami. Soler, who had begun the day leading the American League in RBIs, will now miss several games as a result of this incident.
Team Adjustments
In Soler’s absence, the Angels made several adjustments to their lineup. Third baseman Yoán Moncada took on the designated hitter role, while Oswald Peraza filled in at third base. Jo Adell stepped into Soler’s cleanup spot in the batting order, leaving the Angels short on bench players due to roster rules.
Suzuki advised his players to remain focused, saying, “I just try to tell ’em wherever they are in the lineup, just be themselves. I think sometimes you can tend to overdo things if you’re in that spot or mentality, but I think Jo’s at a place now where he’s comfortable with what he’s doing.”
Background of the Fight
The altercation began when Soler homered off López and was later hit by a fastball from the pitcher. Tensions escalated when Soler charged the mound after a wild pitch. The fight resulted in both benches clearing as players attempted to separate the two.
“I asked him if everything was OK and the answer he gave me, I didn’t like it,” Soler explained through an interpreter following the incident. López, who had previously been Soler’s teammate, stated that there was “never any intent” to hit Soler with the pitch.
Performance Statistics
Prior to his suspension, Soler had played in all 18 games for the Angels this season, predominantly as a designated hitter. His recent performance included a .313 batting average over the past ten games, contributing significantly to the team’s offensive efforts.
Soler’s overall statistics include a .849 OPS, with notable success against López, hitting five homers in just 23 at-bats against him.
