Due to this, the proceedings of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day. Meanwhile, the government introduced a bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court.
The beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament was a stormy one on Monday. Both Houses were adjourned for the day after Congress-led opposition members created a ruckus demanding discussion on the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and alleged embezzlement of donations at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya.
Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day and will now meet on July 21 at 11:00 am. Lok Sabha proceedings were also adjourned till 11:00 am tomorrow. The session, which runs till August 13, is expected to be politically heated as the opposition presses for a debate on key issues ahead of the upcoming state elections.
Bills introduced amid uproar
In the Lok Sabha today, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 amid sloganeering by the opposition. Meghwal sought permission to introduce the bill, which seeks to further amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956. The proposed law seeks to replace the ordinance brought by the Center which increased the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 to 37.
Apart from the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, the government is going to introduce the Prevention of Insults to National Honor (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Rajya Sabha. The proposed law seeks to amend the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971, to make any obstruction or insult to the national anthem Vande Mataram a criminal offence.
The opposition has indicated that it will press for a discussion on the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, alleged embezzlement of donations at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya and other issues during the session. (ANI)
