BHEL has developed and tested 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage AC Transformer with completely indigenous technology. This will make it easier to deliver electricity over long distances with less loss.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a major achievement in the power sector. The company has developed 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage (UHV) AC Transformer completely with indigenous technology and has also completed its successful testing. This achievement is being considered special because till now technology of this level was available only in a few selected countries of the world. With this achievement, India has also joined the list of countries which can design and develop such high capacity transformers themselves.
Design and construction done in Bhopal plant
This 1200 kV transformer has been completely designed and manufactured at BHEL’s Bhopal plant. Now it will be installed at Power Grid’s National Test Station located at Bina, Madhya Pradesh, where its further testing process will be completed.
Transformer capacity and characteristics
This new transformer from BHEL is a single-phase auto transformer with 333 MVA capacity and 1150/400/33 kV configuration. Its biggest feature is that with its help a large amount of electricity can be sent over very long distances with less energy loss (Transmission Loss). This will make power distribution more efficient and also increase the capacity of the grid.
Will be included in the country’s largest substation equipment
This huge transformer will be installed in India’s first 1200 kV Experimental National Test Station. According to BHEL, this will be the largest electrical equipment ever installed in any Indian substation. It has been prepared using modern technology, controlled environment and as per international quality standards.
Why is 1200 kV technology important?
1200 kV Ultra High Voltage technology is considered very important for the future power system. The main advantages of this technology include..
- Transmission of power over long distances with low loss
- ability to transmit large amounts of power
- Expansion of existing 765 kV network
- Making the National Grid more stable and reliable
- Capacity to handle higher load
- Improve reliability of power supply
- Reduction in dependence on foreign technology
Transformer ready after two years of research
BHEL did research and development for about two years to prepare this transformer. The company has developed it completely with indigenous technology without any foreign company or technical cooperation. For its manufacturing, a special transformer manufacturing facility was used in Bhopal, where special attention was given to quality and safety standards.
BHEL has already made a record
This is not the first time that BHEL has made a major achievement in transformer technology. Earlier, the company has also developed India’s first indigenous 500 MVA, 765 kV Transformer. The development of 1200 kV transformer is being considered as the next big step in the same direction.
How will the country’s electricity system benefit?
With this new technology, solar power and wind energy generated in remote areas of the country can be transported to big cities and industrial areas more efficiently. This technology can play an important role in future expansion of the national electricity grid and better use of renewable energy.
future prospects
Experts believe that this technology can be produced on a large scale in the coming times. Its potential benefits include.
- National Grid expansion
- Increase in power transmission capacity
- Reduce dependence on imported technology
- Possibility of export to foreign markets
- India getting strong recognition in the field of Ultra High Voltage technology
There are still some challenges
However, there are some challenges in adopting this technology on a large scale. The cost of the project is quite high. Infrastructure will have to be developed on a large scale. Incorporating new technology into the national grid will require overcoming initial technical and operational challenges.
