Ethiopia is preparing to introduce a free transit visa for passengers flying with Ethiopian Airlines, allowing travellers to leave the airport and explore the country during layovers.
The proposal, approved by the Council of Ministers, is part of a joint initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, Ethiopian Airlines, and the Immigration and Citizenship Service. The goal is simple: turn short stopovers into mini-trips and encourage more visitors to experience Ethiopia’s culture, food, and historic sites.
If implemented as planned, eligible passengers could stay in Ethiopia from 24 hours up to seven days without paying for a transit visa.
Why Ethiopia Wants Stopover Travellers to Explore
Addis Ababa is already one of Africa’s biggest aviation hubs, connecting travellers between Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Many passengers currently spend long hours waiting at the airport before catching connecting flights. Ethiopia now wants those travellers to step outside the terminal and discover the country instead.
The initiative reflects a growing trend among global airlines and tourism boards. Countries like the UAE, Qatar, and Singapore have successfully used stopover programmes to boost tourism spending and global visibility.
For Ethiopia, the plan could highlight attractions such as:
- Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches
- Simien Mountains National Park
- Addis Ababa’s museums and coffee culture
- The historic city of Gondar
- The Great Rift Valley landscapes
Current Ethiopia Transit Visa Rules
At present, most travellers need a transit visa if they want to leave Addis Ababa Bole International Airport during transit. Here is how the current system generally works:
1. No Visa Needed for Short Airside Transit
Travellers who remain inside the international transit area typically do not need a visa if their layover is short and they do not pass through immigration.
2. A Transit Visa Is Required If Leaving the Airport
If passengers want to exit the airport and enter Ethiopia during a layover, they usually need a transit visa or tourist visa. Transit visas are commonly issued for short stays ranging from 12 to 72 hours.
3. Basic Documents Are Usually Required
Typical transit visa requirements include:
- Passport valid for at least six months
- Confirmed onward flight ticket
- Visa for the final destination (if required)
- Completed visa application form
- Passport-size photo
Processing times generally range from 3 to 5 working days when applying online in advance.
What the New Free Transit Visa Could Change
If implemented smoothly, the free transit visa could make Ethiopia more attractive as a connecting hub. Instead of waiting at the airport for 8 to 20 hours, travellers may be able to:
- Take a short city tour in Addis Ababa
- Experience Ethiopian coffee culture
- Visit cultural landmarks during long layovers
- Break long journeys into more comfortable segments
For travellers flying long-haul routes between continents, even a one-day stop can make a big difference.
It also aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ growing global network, which connects more than 120 international destinations.
Who Could Benefit the Most
The proposed visa is expected to help:
- Long-haul travellers connecting between Asia, Europe, and Africa.
- Tourists looking to explore multiple destinations in one trip.
- Frequent flyers want a break during long journeys.
- Travellers interested in African culture and history.
Transit stopover programmes often increase tourism spending, hotel stays, and local tour bookings.
When Will the Free Transit Visa Start?
Authorities have confirmed that the programme has been approved, but full implementation details are still awaited. Information such as eligibility criteria, application process, and exact start date is expected to be announced soon.
Travellers planning future trips with Ethiopian Airlines should keep an eye on updates, as the new policy could make stopovers in Ethiopia easier and more affordable.
The Bigger Picture
Airlines worldwide are rethinking the role of transit hubs. Instead of simply moving passengers from one flight to another, countries are increasingly using stopovers to promote tourism.
If Ethiopia’s free transit visa launches as expected, Addis Ababa could become one of Africa’s most appealing stopover destinations. For travellers, this means one more chance to turn a long layover into a meaningful travel experience.
