MS University Dance Video: Sometimes a small video, which is just an art performance on a stage, suddenly becomes a topic of debate in the entire country. Something similar happened in Vadodara, Gujarat, when the dance video of a student of MS University of Baroda went viral on social media and within no time the matter got stuck between politics, values and personal life.
What is the whole matter?
During a cultural fest at the Faculty of Arts, MS University, Vadodara, a student danced on the song ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’ from the Bollywood film ‘Beta’. This program was organized by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
As soon as the video surfaced, people associated with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Congress shared it on social media and called it “indecent” and “against values”.

Student’s pain: ‘Video was spread without my permission’
As the controversy escalated, the student herself came forward and presented her side by releasing a video. She looked very emotional in the video. She said that she danced wearing a simple saree and her aim was just to showcase her art. He admitted that the choice of song was probably not right, but it was not such a big issue that he should be targeted like this.
The student clearly said that her video was made viral without her permission and it was made a political weapon.
Distance from ABVP and NSUI, still an issue
The student also clarified that she is neither associated with ABVP nor knows any member of NSUI. And she says that if she had realized that there could be so much controversy over a dance, she would never have performed this.
Student in mental stress, appeals to society
The student told that after this whole controversy she is going through mental pressure. He appealed to the people that before sharing any video, they must think about what effect it will have on that person. She also raised the question whether dancing on Bollywood songs is a new thing? And if it is considered wrong, then one should stop listening to such songs.
Politics heats up, both sides face to face
Politics has also intensified regarding this matter. Leaders associated with the Congress raised the video widely, while ABVP leader Samarth Bhatt alleged that the NSUI was using a woman’s video for a political agenda. She said this is “narrative politics”, in which the voice and context of a student is being ignored.
The big question: art, culture or politics?
This controversy is no longer limited to just one dance. The question that arises is where is the boundary between the freedom of art, the values of society and the agenda of politics?
This case of MS University shows how quickly social media can put someone in the spotlight today, whether they are ready or not.
