Asha Bhosle laid to rest in Mumbai: Celebs, fans gather for music legend’s final goodbye

Asha Bhosle funeral: India bid an emotional farewell to legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle as her last rites were performed with full state honours at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Monday evening (April 13). The passing of the iconic singer, whose voice shaped Indian cinema for more than eight decades, drew an outpouring of grief from across the country.

Asha Bhosle, widely regarded as one of the most versatile singers in Indian music history, died on April 12 at the age of 92. She passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to multi-organ failure after being admitted a day earlier for severe exhaustion and a chest infection.

Her funeral ceremony began at around 4 pm at Shivaji Park crematorium. The event was attended by several prominent personalities from the film, music and political spheres.

Among those present were actors Aamir Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Ranveer Singh, Tabu and Riteish Deshmukh, along with filmmaker Ramesh Sippy and music composer A.R. Rahman. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali Tendulkar also paid their respects. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attended the ceremony as the state honoured Bhosle’s immense contribution to Indian culture.

Earlier in the day, her mortal remains were kept at her residence, Casa Grande, in Lower Parel, where a steady stream of admirers gathered to pay tribute.

Asha Bhosle’s final journey surrounded by fans

In the afternoon, Asha’s mortal remains were transported to Shivaji Park in a specially decorated vehicle. The vehicle was adorned with white and yellow flowers, reportedly among the singer’s favourites. Along the five-kilometre route to the crematorium, hundreds of fans gathered to catch one last glimpse of the legendary voice. Many stood silently as the procession passed.

Asha Bhosle leaves behind an unparalleled musical legacy. Over a career spanning more than eight decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs across multiple languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Gujarati.

Born in 1933, Asha Tai began her professional journey at just ten years old with the Marathi song Chala Chala Nav Bhala from the film Majha Bal. By the 1950s, she had firmly established herself as one of Bollywood’s most sought-after playback singers. Her contributions earned her numerous honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
