Ecuador Moves Visa Applications Fully Online via e-Visas, Processing Times Increase

Ecuador is quietly changing how foreign nationals apply for consular visas. Authorities have effectively moved the entire process online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility’s electronic visa platform, known as e-Visas.

There has been no major public announcement yet. Still, in practice, applicants now complete almost every step digitally, from submission to final approval.

For travellers, foreign workers, and businesses, this marks a significant shift in how Ecuador processes visas.

Which Ecuador Visas Are Affected?

The fully online process now applies to several consular visa categories, including:

  • Acts of Commerce visa
  • Work Contract visa
  • Temporary Mercosur visa

Applicants, or their authorised representatives, must submit applications through the eVISAS system instead of relying on in-person consulate appointments.

Previously, the process combined online submissions with mandatory visits to consulates. Now, the system handles most steps electronically.

Authorities can still request an in-person appearance if additional verification is required. Document requirements remain unchanged.

Why Ecuador Is Moving to a Digital Visa System

Ecuador has been gradually modernising its immigration system. In November 2024, authorities also moved in-country visa applications online.

Centralising applications under the Ministry, rather than through individual consulates, aims to create a more consistent process and reduce paperwork.

For frequent travellers and foreign workers, this could eventually make applications simpler and easier to track.

Processing Times Are Currently Increasing

While the new digital system is designed to improve efficiency in the long run, applicants are currently experiencing delays.

Because all applications are now processed through one central platform, the system is facing congestion. This has created backlogs affecting both overseas applications and those submitted within Ecuador.

Processing times are now moving closer to the government’s maximum limit of 60 business days. Previously, many applications were completed in about 30 business days.

Authorities expect delays to continue in the coming months as the system stabilises.

Ecuador Ends Visa-Free Transit

Last year, Ecuador ended its visa-free airport transits for travellers from 45 countries. Anyone from visa-required nations must now obtain a Transit Visa, even if they don’t leave the airport.

What Travellers and Workers Should Know

If you are planning to apply for an Ecuador consular visa, it is best to prepare early and allow extra time. Key points:

  • Applications must now be submitted online through eVisas
  • Required documents remain the same
  • Authorities may still request an in-person appointment in certain cases
  • Processing times may reach up to 60 business days

Final Thoughts

Ecuador’s move to a fully online visa system reflects a broader trend toward digital immigration services worldwide. Once the system settles, the process could become faster and more convenient. For now, applicants should plan ahead and expect longer processing timelines.
