Mumbai: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT company, has made job offers to only 25,000 freshers in 2026-27. The IT giant said that the hiring of more college graduates will depend upon the demand scenario.
Notably, TCS had employed 44,000 freshers in the previous financial year 2025-26, one of the highest by any private sector employer in the country. Importantly, the largest information technology services company provided the employment opportunities despite the headwinds it faced.
“We have made 25,000 offers for freshers in FY27. Clarity on demand will lead to more hiring,” its chief executive and managing director K Krithivasan told PTI in an interview.
TCS Strategy on Lateral Talent and Training Investment
The hiring situation seems to be grim, as the top official of the TCS said there are no plans to increase dependence on lateral hires and also replied in negative when asked if the delivery model has undergone any change.
Commenting further, Krithivasan said up to nine months is required to train a fresher to transform into a full-fledge employee, while a lateral can deliver immediately. He categorically stated that the business needs of the company will influence its hiring strategies.
For at least three consecutive years, TCS has been hiring 40,000 or more freshers every fiscal year.
When asked whether TCS will go ahead with similar round of restructuring like the one it did in the previous financial year, when it fired at least 12,000 staffers, Krithivasan said people can have “thriving careers” with the company till they perform well.
The TCS official dismissed the reports that entry of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies had led to layoffs in 2025. Krithivasan said the lay off process was mostly for the senior-level talent, because the style of executing projects had changed of late, and the senior layer was no longer required.
Allaying the fears of stock market investors, Krithivasan assured the investors that the company is investing for the future, and the same will accrue in growth.
Replying to the query regards to business environment of TCS, Krithivasan said the pipeline of projects are “stable” and quickly added “stable is good”.
