2. Both sides can wait until the ceasefire ends
A two-week, conditional ceasefire between the US and Iran began on April 8. Even if the talks fail, both sides can continue ‘back-channel’ (indirect) talks until the ceasefire ends. The discussions in Islamabad covered economic, military, legal and nuclear issues, and written proposals were also exchanged. Even if formal negotiations break down completely, both sides can still revisit these issues. Vance has also indicated adopting a ‘wait-and-watch’ strategy. Vance said, “We have been in constant contact with the team as we negotiate in good faith. And we leave here with a very simple proposal: a path to mutual understanding, which is our final and best offer. Now we’ll see if the Iranian side accepts it.”
