Delhi: City to witness mostly clear skies today, temperatures to rise in coming week

New Delhi: Temperatures in Delhi are expected to rise in the coming week. This comes after days of pleasant weather in the national capital. The city even received unseasonal rains, which kept the temperatures down in most of March and April. The India Meteorological Department has predicted that temperatures would reach 40 degrees Celsius by April 17, marking a clear shift towards summer.

Weekend to be windy, mostly clear skies in city

According to the weather department, the weekend is expected to be windy in the National Capital Region (NCR). Humidity will remain between 25% to 55% and no major weather warnings have been issued for these 2 days, by the department.

The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to be around 36 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be 19 degrees Celsius, predicted IMD. The temperatures however will keep rising in the coming week, and on April 14 it may reach 38 degrees Celsius. On April 15 and 16, the temperatures are expected to be around 39 degrees Celsius.

By April 17, Delhi might see extremely hot weather with the mercury touching 40 degrees Celsius. Not only will day temperatures rise during this entire week, night temperatures are also expected to increase from 19 degrees Celsius to around 24 degrees Celsius. However despite the rise in temperatures, the weather department has not issued a heatwave warning, at least till April 16.

IMD spokesperson Akhil Srivastava was quoted by Times Now as saying, “The extended-range forecast issued by the IMD on 2nd April for the next 2 weeks suggests that heat waves are unlikely over Delhi until 16th April 2026. The monthly outlook for April indicates near-normal heatwave days in Delhi, and the seasonal outlook suggests above-normal heatwave days during April to June 2026, suggesting a possibility of increased temperatures and heatwave days in the remaining season.”

More heatwaves expected this summer

While the current forecast shows that April will have near normal heatwaves, the overall heatwave days between April to June are expected to be more than usual. This means that residents of the city would have to prepare for hotter days ahead.

However extreme heat is unlikely to hit the national capital anytime soon.
