Matthew Schaefer Ties NHL Rookie Defenseman Goals Record with 23 Goals

Matthew Schaefer of the New York Islanders has tied the NHL record for the most goals scored by a rookie defenseman, achieving his 23rd goal of the season on Thursday night.

This milestone matches the record set by Hall of Famer Brian Leetch.

Schaefer’s record-tying goal occurred at 9:39 of the second period, giving the Islanders a 3-2 lead over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored after receiving a pass from Tony DeAngelo and beating goaltender Artur Akhtyamov through the legs.

Schaefer’s Remarkable Rookie Season

At just 18 years old, Schaefer has been delivering an outstanding rookie season, ranking second on the Islanders with 59 points. His performance showcases his elite offensive capabilities from the blue line.

This goal marked his first since March 21 against the Montreal Canadiens, concluding a brief scoring drought while adding another achievement to his impressive rookie resume.

Historic Context and Future Aspirations

Selected first overall in the previous year’s draft, Schaefer entered the NHL after an injury-shortened junior season but quickly made his mark. He became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to record a point in his debut and has set several age-related records since then.

With one more goal, Schaefer could surpass Leetch, who scored 23 goals for the New York Rangers during the 1988-89 season and won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Schaefer is currently the frontrunner for this year’s award.
