The wait for increase in DA (Dearness Allowance) for central government employees and pensioners has become long. No decision was taken on this in the recently held Union Cabinet meeting, due to which DA currently remains at 58% only.
Why is there a delay?
Usually, the January DA hike is announced by the end of March, but this time April has come and no announcement has been made yet. Experts say that this delay is not due to policy, but due to procedure.
It is being told that DA is now approaching 60%, hence the government is investigating the financials more closely this time. Besides, coordination is also being done with the changes of the 8th Pay Commission which will be implemented from January 1, 2026.
Is this delay unusual?
This rarely happens, but in the past also such delays have been seen at the time of change in Pay Commission. According to experts, the government probably wants to adjust the payment according to the new financial year (2026-27).
Is DA going to freeze?
There is definitely a discussion on social media about DA freezing, but no such official statement has come from the government. DA is an essential salary component, which is decided on the basis of inflation (CPI-IW). Experts believe that the hike has not stopped, it will just come late and arrears will also be received from January 2026.
How much increase is expected?
According to reports, there may be an increase of 2% in DA, which will increase it from 58% to 60%. The level of 60% is considered special, because after this the discussion of adding (merging) DA to the basic salary starts.
What is the impact on employees?
At present, employees may feel some financial pressure, because they are working on the salary of 2025 with the inflation of 2026. But when the hike comes, the arrears will be received simultaneously. For example, an employee with a basic salary of ₹ 56,100 can get around ₹ 6,700 to ₹ 7,000 arrears from January to March.
However, receiving arrears simultaneously may result in higher taxes that month and benefits like HRA and PF may also be affected for a short period of time. Overall, DA hike has not been frozen. This delay is only related to the process and preparation of the new pay commission. An announcement is expected soon, which will provide relief to employees and pensioners.
