Indian cricket has suffered a major setback amid IPL 2026. India’s oldest cricketer C.D. Gopinath has passed away. He breathed his last on 9 April 2026 in Chennai at the age of 96. CD. Gopinath was also the last surviving member of India’s first Test winning team. After his death, 95-year-old Chandrakant Patankar has become India’s oldest living Test cricketer.

Gopinath was born on 1 March 1930 in Chennai. He made his Test debut in 1951 against England at the Brabourne Stadium. In his career, he played a total of 8 test matches, in which he scored 242 runs in 12 innings. His test average was 20.17 and his best score was 50 not out. Apart from Test, Gopinath played 83 matches for Madras in first class cricket and scored 4259 runs, in which the average was 42.16. He played an important role in Madras winning the title for the first time by scoring a century in the Ranji Trophy final of 1954-55.

At the same time, his most memorable contribution was in India’s first Test victory against England in Chennai in 1952. In that match, he scored 35 runs while batting at number 8. He was the last surviving member of that historic team. At the same time, Gopinath played his last Test against Australia at Eden Gardens in 1960.
