Assembly Elections 2026: Kerala heading towards massive voter turnout; over 62% polling till 3 pm, EC expects 90%

New Delhi: Legislative Assembly elections in Kerala are currently underway to elect 140 members of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The votes will be counted and the results will be declared on 4 May 2026. 

Massive turnout in Kerala

In Kerala, by 3 pm, 62.71 per cent voting was recorded. Kerala chief electoral officer (CEO) Rathan U Kelkar said the voting trend indicated that 90 per cent voter turnout would be seen in the state. “If the current trend continues, by the time polling concludes, we are confident we will see a turnout of 90 per cent,” PTI news agency cited Kelkar as saying. Before this, the highest voting percentage that Kerala has witnessed was in 1960 when 85.77 per cent turnout was observed.

In Kerala, 2.71 crore electors are voting to elect from a roster of 883 candidates for its 140-member Legislative Assembly. A tight contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected.

Earlier in the morning, constituencies in Ernakulam showed high voter turnout with Thripunithura recording 40.6 per cent followed by Vypen (37.54 per cent), Kunnathunad (37.31 percent),  Thrikkakkara (37.18 per cent) and Aluva (36.89 per cent).

Elections in other states

Apart from Kerala, Assam and Puducherry are also currently undergoing voting.

In Assam, polling for 126 seats is being held where over 2.50 crore electors are eligible to vote. The BJP-led NDA is seeking a third consecutive term. Similarly, an election to elect the 30-member Legislative Assembly of Puducherry is also underway where 10,14,070 electors are eligible to participate in the vote.

According to the Election Commission, by 3 pm, Assam recorded a voter turnout of 75.91 per cent, while Puducherry logged a voter turnout of 72.40 per cent by 1 pm.
