CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago White Sox have optioned opening day starter Shane Smith to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday after a difficult start to the season, marked by three challenging outings.
Despite being an All-Star as a rookie last year, the 26-year-old right-hander has struggled with fastball command, posting an 0-2 record with a 10.80 ERA, having allowed 10 earned runs over 8 1/3 innings while walking nine and striking out 11.
Recent Performance
In his latest appearance against Baltimore, Smith managed to throw 3 1/3 scoreless innings but required 99 pitches to do so. His performance included five walks and one hit batter, contributing to the White Sox’s 4-2 loss as the Orioles scored three runs in the eighth inning.
Manager’s Comments
Manager Will Venable expressed confidence in Smith’s potential, stating, “He’s a total pro. He takes accountability and understands the spot that he’s putting the team in. And really it’s about getting him to be the best version of himself. This guy is a very good pitcher. He’s an important part of this organization and an important part of our success.”
Future Expectations
Although the White Sox do not anticipate a prolonged stint in the minors for Smith, Venable did not specify a timeline for his return. “You know we have a very clear idea of what we need to do,” Venable added. “We just weren’t able to get those results to stick here. So he’s going to continue to make his adjustments.”
Team Updates
In addition to Smith’s demotion, the White Sox announced the selection of left-hander Tyler Schweitzer’s contract from Charlotte. The team also transferred infielder and outfielder Brooks Baldwin to the 60-day injured list following right elbow surgery.
