Madhubala once cried and begged Dilip Kumar to say sorry to…, but…: ‘Humari zindagi barbaad ho jayegi…’

adhubala and Dilip Kumar, two of the most accomplished actors in Indian cinema, were also well-known for their poignant love story. Madhubala and Dilip Kumar fell in love during the shooting of Tarana (1951). Their relationship soon became a matter of discussion within the industry, with many expecting the young couple to tie the knot. However, things soon took a drastic turn, leading their sweet love story to become their biggest heartbreak.

Why did Madhubala and Dilip Kumar break up?

Madhubala and Dilip Kumar were deeply in love; however, a major rift came into their relationship during the making of Naya Daur in 1957. The film’s director, BR Chopra, shifted the film’s shooting to an outdoor location; however, due to his daughter’s health and safety concerns, Madhubala’s father, Ataullah Khan, refused to allow her to travel, leading to her exit from the film.

Following this decision, BR Chopra filed a lawsuit against Madhubala for breach of contract, but what came as a breaking point was when Dilip Kumar chose to testify in court in support of the filmmaker. This led to major upheaval in his relationship with Madhubala.

Why did Madhubala ask Dilip Kumar to apologise?

Following the Naya Daur court case, Madhubala made efforts to save her relationship with Dilip Kumar. Her sister, Madhur Bhushan, told ETimes in an interview, “Had the court case not happened, Madhubala would have probably got married to Dilip. She had urged Dilip Saab to apologise to our father. She had tried to convince him to let bygones be bygones, just say one sorry for the sake of their relationship. Dilip Saab refused.”

Madhur Bhushan said that the whole incident took a toll on Madhubala, who only ever truly loved Dilip Kumar, but was also not willing to go against her father’s wishes. “She would cry and tell Dilip Saab, ‘Dekho humari zindagi barbaad ho jayegi (our lives will fall apart)’ and Dilip Saab would ask her, ‘Tum itni zidd kyun kar rahi ho?’ (Why are you forcing me so much)?”

Who did Madhubala marry?

The Naya Daur court case completely ruined Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s relationship. The latter went on to marry singer Kishore Kumar and passed away just 9 years after her marriage. Dilip Kumar, on the other hand, tied the knot with Saira Banu.
