At present, the lifestyle of the people is changing rapidly, due to which the risk of serious diseases is also increasing. Especially fatal disease like cancer is now engulfing more people than before.
This is the reason that people have become more cautious about their health and conduct health check -ups regularly. But do you know that your blood group can also increase the risk of stomach cancer? Let’s know about this in detail.
How is the blood group decided?
Most people know about their blood group only when they have to donate blood or go through a medical process. Actually, we get the blood group genetically from parents. There are four main blood groups worldwide – A, B, AB and O. These letters reflect the combination of antigens and antibodies present in the blood. Along with the blood group, positive (+) and negative (-) are also associated, which suggests whether the RH factor is present in the person’s blood.
Is there a danger of disease associated with blood group?
Yes, research has revealed that the blood group may be associated with some diseases. According to a study published in BMC Cancer Journal in 2019, people who have blood group A or AB have a higher risk of stomach cancer.
What came out in the study?
This study told that compared to people with O blood group:
- The risk of stomach cancer was 13% higher among people with A blood group.
- This danger increases by 18% in people with AB blood group.
A similar pattern was seen on reviewing more than 40 studies. The risk of cancer in type A was 19% on average and 9% in type AB.
What is the relation of blood group with stomach cancer?
Research did not make it clear that only A or AB blood group causes cancer, but it is found that these blood groups have some biological differences which can increase the risk of cancer. For example, people with A blood groups may reduce stomach acid production capacity. Also, their ability to identify and eliminate cancer cells of their immune system is also different.
Helicobacter pylori relation
The study also found that people with A blood group are expected to be infected with bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori. This bacteria is considered a major cause of stomach cancer. However, this danger was also seen in those in which this bacteria did not exist. If Helicobacter Pylori infection occurs in people with AB blood group, then the possibility of stomach cancer increases further.
Which people have a higher risk of stomach cancer?
- According to the National Cancer Institute, this cancer is less common in the US, but it is the fifth most common cancer worldwide.
- Its cases are seen more in Asia, Eastern Europe and parts of South America.
- Its possibility in men is doubled compared to women.
- Its danger increases with aging, but now its cases are also coming up in the youth, especially among the Hispanic women.
